The City of New Rochelle retains the lowest crime rate among similar municipalities in Westchester County and New York State, and continues for the second consecutive year to have the lowest total number of Part 1 Crimes since 1961, according to the 2017 Annual Report released this week by the New Rochelle Police Department.

In 2017, the department responded to nearly 50,000 calls for service. Incorporated in the annual report were Part I crime statistics for 2017, showing the lowest Part 1 Crimes since 1961, including a continued decline in Burglaries (12%, following a 15% reduction in 2016). Rape and Larceny were also down. Nationally, New Rochelle ranks in the top 20 for safe cities with populations of 80,000 to 99,999..

“We are very gratified that the low crime rate continues for New Rochelle, and we remain one of the safest cities among comparable cities our size nationwide,” said New Rochelle Acting Police Commissioner Joseph Schaller.

The report also details initiatives implemented in 2017, including enhanced officer training and the installation of a prescription drug giveback receptacle. The department also hosted community-friendly Youth Fishing Trips and the second annual National Night Out.
