Mention New Rochelle to lots of people all around America, and their first association will be: the Dick Van Dyke Show.

A full-rigged sitcom classic that also propelled Mary Tyler Moore to stardom, the Dick Van Dyke Show was set fictionally on Bonnie Meadow Road in New Rochelle.  Well, there is a real Bonnie Meadow Road, very close to Davis Elementary School, and it was the home of Carl Reiner, the show’s creator (and the father of Rob Reiner.)

A few months ago, residents of Bonnie Meadow Road had the great idea of assigning the street an honorary name — Dick Van Dyke Show Way — to recognize its place in America’s cultural imagination.  Now, after a thumbs-up from our Historic and Landmarks Review Board, the City Council is poised to make it official next Tuesday.

BTW, this fun painting hangs in my office at City Hall.
