PoliceEarlier this year, the City brought together a group of civic and religious leaders, Police officers, attorneys, and academics to take a look at Police practices in New Rochelle.  Yesterday, the Committee released its final report, with ten specific recommendations for improving Police-community relations.

While noting New Rochelle’s impressive public safety record and  demonstrated commitment to community Policing, the report also says “it is imperative that the NRPD remains prepared to handle the challenges associated with Policing in the 21st century.”

Some of the Committee’s suggestions are programmatic or philosophical, while others have budgetary implications, and I look forward to a constructive discussion about next steps.

In the meantime, the Committee members deserve our thanks for their hard work and for demonstrating that individuals and groups with very different perspectives can successfully collaborate and achieve consensus on tough issues.
