The Wooden Spoon at 16 Division Street in downtown New Rochelle had its grand opening just a couple of weeks ago, but is already drawing a good crowd.

The restaurant’s tag line “burgers beer grub” is a good indicator of what to expect on the menu: lots of simple, straightforward comfort food.  But the Wooden Spoon adds enough creative touches to keep everything interesting.  All the dishes I tried on two visits were spot on and served up with care.

The lobster roll special was great – full of lobster meat, little or no mayo.  Owen was all over the mac n cheese bar (he’d probably eat mac n cheese for every meal, if we allowed it.)  A southwest cobb salad was fresh as can be.  And the best thing we sampled: the crispy brussel sprouts, roasted with cranberries, cheese, and maple syrup — almost a dessert.  Really, really delicious.

The folks who run the Wooden Spoon say they’re getting lots of visits from downtown residents, a good example of how housing and commercial activity support each other.
