New Rochelleans Steven Stein and David Brot founded NewRo Runners just last summer for six local residents to share their weekly run and encourage each other to stay in shape. One year later, their membership has grown to over 50 runners from New Rochelle and neighboring communities. Each Saturday and Sunday at 8 am they run a different route in New Rochelle, announced through their email list and posted on their website, www.newrorunners.org.
On October 10, twenty-five NewRo Runners participated in the Westchester Running Festival half and quarter marathons along the Bronx River Parkway, hosted by Westchester Medical Center. Friends and family cheered along the route and at the finish line, and waved a big banner with the group’s running “R” logo.
NewRo Runners’s mission is to provide a supportive environment for runners of all levels and ages in the area and to promote a healthier community. These goals are consistent with the public health objectives in New Rochelle’s Draft Sustainability Plan, GreeNR, which includes initiatives to establish walking groups and encourage physical activity.
