City Maintains Impressive Safety Record, Despite Small Year-to-Year Increase

The New Rochelle Police Department has released final public safety statistics for 2008. Part I crimes increased by 6% over 2007. Despite this negative year-to-year statistic, New Rochelle retains its status as one of the safest cities in America, achieving the fourth lowest crime rate among the fifty cities of comparable size. In addition, New Rochelle retained the lowest crime rate among comparable cities in New York State, as well as the lowest crime rate among the four major cities of Westchester. The 2008 up-tick is driven almost exclusively by an increase in non-violent property crimes.
