New Soccer Field Should Be Completed by End of Summer

Skidelsky Field at City Park will be entirely reconstructed beginning next month, with an expected end-of-August completion. The new soccer field will be more playable and attractive, and will also feature a subsurface retention chamber to help control flooding in the surrounding area. The City obtained funding for this project from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) following the nor’easter of April 2007. The Skidelsky Field reconstruction kicks off the anticipated larger renovation of City Park as a whole.

As an interesting side note, the City received an unusually large number of bids for this job — fifteen — with the accepted bid coming in well below expectations. More intense competition for municipal contracts may prove to be one of the few silver linings in this bleak economy.
