New Rochelle Is Fourth Safest In Nation, Despite Small Year-To-Year Increase

With 2006 crime statistics now fully compiled, New Rochelle has retained its status as one of the safest cities in America of its size. Among the fifty-one cities with a population between 70,000 and 80,000, New Rochelle boasts the fourth lowest crime rate (22.06 incidents per thousand residents.) New Rochelle also has the lowest crime rate among the comparable urban centers of Westchester and New York State. It should be noted, however, that our city did experience a slight up-tick in criminal activity from our 40-year historic low in 2005, with the increase concentrated in property crimes. Our Police Department is constantly evaluating patterns or criminal activity in order to better promote safety and will continue working with the community to keep our crime rate as low as possible.
