Lecount Square Project To Incorporate Post Office Facade

As you may know, the Lecount Square project is proposed to include roughly one million square feet of new housing, retail, office, and hotel space on the large block bounded by North Avenue, Huguenot Street, Anderson Street, and Lecount Place. Because this area includes the New Rochelle Post Office, the future of the Post Office’s historic facade and interior murals had been a subject of public concern. This week, the developers of the project announced that, in response to requests from the City and citizens, they intended to preserve the historic postal facade and incorporate it into the overall project design. The Post Office is a distinctive structure at a prominent location, and has been part of our downtown’s visual fabric for many decades, so I am pleased by this decision. As we proceed with this and other economic development plans, it will be essential to protect the valued elements of our past that give New Rochelle a unique sense of place and charm.
