For several years, day laborers have congregated in large numbers on the sidewalks of Union Avenue during the early morning to await pick-up for jobs. Led by Councilman Roberto Lopez, the Adult Learning Center, Hispanic Women Leaders of Westchester, Bellas Artes Business Council, and other community activists, the City has helped establish a day laborer pick-up site in the parking area for St. Gabriel’s Church. This new arrangement should better provide for the security and safety of laborers, while addressing the quality of life concerns of some neighbors.
