The exceptionally high cost of environmental remediation on Davids Island has been among the principal obstacles to development. Last year, Congresswoman Nita Lowey secured $1.5 million for clean-up expenses. In just the past few weeks, Rep. Lowey followed up with an additional $4 million. Although several years (at least) of work and discussion remain before plans of any kind can be implemented, these appropriations will go a long way towards transforming Davids Island into a publicly-accessible asset to New Rochelle and the region.
