WABC-TV (New York’s Channel 7) ran a very positive story about New Rochelle on its nightly news late last month. Reported by Tim Fleischer, the story contained a review of recent development initiatives downtown, interviews with upbeat Main Street merchants, and a conversation with City officials. The Business Improvement District was instrumental in drawing the attention of Channel 7 News and in arranging a downtown tour for Mr. Fleischer. The favorable publicity, broadcast throughout the entire New York area, is, of course, helpful and welcome. Perhaps more important is the outsider’s perspective offered by Channel 7. We in New Rochelle are sometimes so focused on serious day-to-day challenges that we neglect to note the bigger picture: that our community has made significant economic and planning strides during the past decade and is much healthier as a result.
